Great Britain Trip – Thursday, Day 5 – Playing Golf in The Lake District

The first hole at Keswick Golf Club

When we planned this great adventure to Great Britain, we decided that if we were going to GB to watch golf, we were also going to play golf. So, we made a tee time at Keswick Golf Club for 10:00 a.m. on our second day in the Lake District. Because the course is located in arguably the most beautiful part of England, the natural beauty of the course made the day especially memorable.

The natural beauty was breathtaking at times

It had been almost 10 years since the four of us had played golf together. Although our handicaps vary widely, the scenery and the fellowship made the round so much fun. Afterwards, we enjoyed beer and comfort food at the clubhouse.

We drove back to Keswick and our cottage to watch some of the first round of The Open. We then had a wonderful dinner at the Pheasant Inn. Afterwards, we explored two lakes in the District in the long twilight that is normal in this part of the world during this time of year.

The four of us had heard about the beauty of the Lake District in England before this trip, but none of us knew exactly where it was or why it is considered so special. Now we know.

The Lake District, located in the Northwest section of the country, has the highest mountains and the largest lakes in England. I have always said that “a lake in the mountains is the most beautiful spot in the world.” And the Lake District is exactly that.

As Carter said, “I want to come back some day and spend more time here.” And so do I. William Wordsworth may have summarized our reaction best when he described it as “The loveliest spot that man hath ever found.” As a resident, he may have been biased. But I must say, it is indeed a beautiful and tranquil spot.
