The Paradox of Closeness

Inspired by Life Lessons and Henri Nouwen

The Paradox of Closeness 6.24.20

Getting close feels good
Feeding our curiosity
Engaging our intellect
Nurturing our need for control

A teacher with children
Is a mother first
Loving and protecting
And loses objectivity

A preacher with children
Is a dad first
Loving and disciplining
And loses empathy

A banker with children
Is a parent first
Loving and encouraging
And loses fiscal restraint

Closeness is needed
But closeness can blind
Pretending to be far
Is a difficult but valuable skill
