Italy/Greece Trip, 2nd Day in Rome – May 22nd

Lots of priests walking around. Does that stride remind you of an album cover?

During our 2nd Day in Rome we focused more on ancient Rome, visiting the Appian Way, the Forum, the Coliseum and the Mamertine Prisons, where the Apostle Peter and the Apostle Paul were imprisoned before their executions. It is believed that Peter’s martyrdom took place 64 A.D. in Nero’s Hippodrome where he was crucified with his head down.  But because Paul was a Roman citizen, he had the choice  of being beheaded instead of being crucified. It is believed that Paul was beheaded four years after Peter was crucified.

The Forum
With our fellow travelers who were also celebrating a 40th!
The most visited spot in Italy. Pompeii is #2.

After visiting the ancient Roman Forum and the Coliseum, we stopped at another street cafe for more Pizza and beer. One definite takeaway from this trip is that Roman Pizzas are my favorite – even more than Neapolitan Pizza, which is quite the statement. After lunch we walked the streets in the section of Rome that included the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Navona Square.

Awesome spot
Also tried baked artichokes
And the sea of people parted
Some things do not change – the Romans still like to drink…

Afterwards, we made our way back to the Hotel to relax and rest before dinner. On our way we grabbed some chips and beer to have in our room. We needed a rest! It was another packed day in Rome. Later we would have dinner at the same quaint spot we had dinner the previous two nights. As always, lots of pasta was served!
