June 17 – We had another delightful breakfast in Turckheim, and then travelled to Colmar for the day. The designer of the Statue of Liberty was born in Colmar. Colmar is beautiful and it was the last “pocket” of German resistance in WWII before the final surge into Germany. The Allies did not bomb Colmar as other cities and as a result, many of its buildings are very old. Because Alsace has traded hands between the Germans and French over the centuries, the town had as much German flavor as French. The pictures are all of Colmar – indeed a very Middle Ages feel to it. We then took a train through the Swiss Alps and the Lake District of Italy to Milan to begin the Italian part of our trip.
June 18 – 6.18.13We woke up in Milan, had our first Italian breakfast which included lots of things I normally do not associate with breakfast, such as cold green beans and flan. We took the subway to central Milan. I will let the pictures tell the story. We are back at our hotel before taking the train to Florence. Milan is definitely the most fashion conscious city I have ever visited.
