Days 3 & 4 at The Homestead

Our family has been going to The Homestead since our boys have been very little. It is a special place for us. And because of that, we love having special people in our lives share it with us. Having Pete, one of my best friends, and Olivia, who is like a true daughter to us, here this week, has made the week even more special. Carter left today (Thursday) to go back to the lake house. I already miss his presence here. Jack and Olivia will go back to Richmond tomorrow morning.

On this post, I am trying a different approach – text not imbedded in the photos and more description of each photo. Please let me know if you prefer this layout for future travel posts. And I have another favor to ask – please share with this community through a comment “your family’s special place.” My in-law’s was Hilton Head, especially Sea Pines Plantation. Because of that, Elizabeth and I spent our honeymoon in Hilton Head! Enjoy days three and four at The Homestead through these photos!

On day 3, we started our day playing two sets of doubles. It was a treat playing on clay courts.
After tennis, we all met at the Spa Garden Pool. I got my first massage since the outbreak of COVID-19 – deep tissue with a lot of elbow action.

Our cottage back yard. Jack, Carter and Pete threw the baseball here before happy hour and dinner.
Enjoyed some Alpha and Omega Chardonnay while grilling dinner!
Dinner on the back porch of cottage with the gang.
We took a walk after dinner to enjoy the sunset.
The end of day three! Ocean sunsets have nothing on mountain sunsets! Those ridges and mountains do look blue!
On day 4, Jack and I started the day with another round of golf on the Old Course. Liv accompanied us.

On Tuesday, I shot a 90 on this course. I played much better today. Photo taken before my approach shot on hole 17. I needed a par and a birdie on the last two holes to break 80, which I have done on this course, but never from the blue tees. I pulled my approach shot on this hole into the left bunker, but made a miraculous sand save to save par.
As we approached Hole 18 – a 170 yard par three – we mentioned to Liv that Jack and I have birdied this hole playing together. And this is where our approach shots landed! Two very makable birdie puts. We both missed. Ahh, the anguish of golf – my 79 from the blue tees slipped through my fingers – literally!

Dinner at Sam Sneads. Menu has changed to comfort food due to COVID-19. We even had pork rinds for an appetizer.

Only two days left of vacation……

It’s great to see you guys able to cherish family and friends! We hope to share some time with you at The Homesteads sometimes as well!
Our special place has been the Outer Banks House for us, a Place you Are very familiar with!
But this is changing and our Andermatt house is taking over this distinction. Up in the mountains in a small village surrounded by mountains, passes, and an amazing golf course it is as welcome oasis during these turbulent times. Jessica is there Right now with three friends, and we and Melanie are heading up there this weekend as well.
Tim will join us next week from LA and willspend his quarantine there.
All our kids are starting to launch a new life in Europe… strange and scary times.
We sincerely hope to see you still this year, even if you must quarantine over here!

    Rolf,
Thanks for sharing. We do hope to spend time with you at the Andermatt house. Outer banks house has been swell too. Yes, having your “go to” destination is good for the soul. Some of those places for my friends include the Outer Banks, Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia, Maine, Kiawah Island, Linville in NC, Sandridge in VA, and hiking and camping anywhere in the mountains. What all of these have in common is connecting and keeping family together.
